The Village on the Lakes Writers & Poets featured speaker is HOUSTON HUGHES, a Performance Poet & Educator whose work covers comedy, drama, tragedy, storytelling, and political commentary, all expertly worded and performed with a tremendous stage-presence which lends his words even more power.

Hughes was introduced to poetry slam in 2006, and by 2010 had already made finals stage at the Individual World Poetry Slam, placing him among the top 12 performance poets in the world!

In 2012, Hughes helped lead the team that put on that years wildly successful Individual World Poetry Slam, bringing it to Arkansas for the first time ever.

The following year, he was asked to be part of the prestigious TEDx program, where he spoke on why art must remain accessible to the everyman.

In 2013 he started up Last Saturday Fayetteville, a variety show and poetry slam which continues the last Saturday of every month.

He has toured across the country, and opened for a variety nationally known acts such as Saul Williams and Otep. He has performed at Crystal Bridges Museum, Walton Arts Center & Fayetteville Underground.

He currently resides in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where he serves as chair of the City of Fayetteville Arts Council, as programming coordinator for the New Year’s Eve music and arts festival Last Night Fayetteville, and as slam master and emcee for Last Saturday.

This April he plans to release a brand new album which contains collaborations with local musicians including Randall Shreve, Cosmic American, and many more.

Reminder again – Please call for reservations!  Thank you!  We look forward to seeing you there!
