layered calm air
voices
raised at the end of a day
like a sound elevator
bringing bits & pieces of
conversations from all over the
neighboring cove
glimpses
of people sharing &
sitting on backyard decks
hearing sounds float up from the water magnified like a microphone
boat engines
move toward the
dam site
birds begin
moving & feeding again
cardinals
twit twit twiting
brown cow birds in flight
hummingbirds at the feeder
rustling
among the ground foliage
baby grey squirrels & chipmunks
finding buried treasures
our hill’s very own ground hog
scurry home
to his burrow
behind an old
fallen tree
conversations
about the day
realizations of
how tired we really are
understanding
yes, indeed,
we need
a drink or
something to eat
because we are starved
haven’t eaten since
this morning
asking wanting
something that fills us up
turns us over
inside
outside space
longing to be
in the last
of the afternoon
sunlight
needing some down time before we can move on from a
busy day
dogs howling after each other in a brotherhood chant
birds doing the same
trying
to locate find each other
checked and
accounted for
vintage airplane’s engine
rolls over the
lake
tv’s play something
anything
but the news
please
a modern jet is heard
making a white
sky-trail
listening
to the end of an afternoon
right before dinner time
slipping into evening
before we reach
twilight
transitioning from
day back into
the night
must be near
as I hear another vintage plane
yet another jet passing
over
on their way home or toward their
travel distination
boundaries
between what is
and
what is to
come
the moments before ~
a change
like the changing of
the guard
sunset
